Star Seed Pocket, Discovered 2022.
A Herkimer diamond pocket with carbon inclusion discovered in Middleville, New York, represents a rare and unique find in the world of mineralogy. Herkimer diamonds are not true diamonds but are quartz crystals with exceptional clarity and natural faceting. These crystals form in Herkimer County, primarily in the region around Middleville, known for its world-class Herkimer diamond deposits.
Herkimer diamonds are actually double-terminated quartz crystals, meaning they have points at both ends. The formation of these crystals begins in ancient limestone pockets formed during the Ordovician period, around 450 million years ago. These limestone deposits were once part of an underwater reef that was later transformed by geological forces into dolostone rock. Over time, minerals from nearby volcanic activity and other geological processes percolated into these limestone pockets, and quartz crystals began to grow.
The crystal faces of Herkimer diamonds are naturally smooth, unlike most quartz crystals that have rough or uneven faces. This is due to the crystal’s unusual formation within rock pockets where minimal disturbance allowed it to grow freely.
The carbon inclusion within the Herkimer diamond is a rare but fascinating feature. Carbon can enter the crystal structure during its formation, often trapped inside as it crystallizes. These inclusions can appear as black or gray markings, clouds, or even visible specks within the otherwise clear quartz. This carbon content may affect the clarity and visual appearance, but it can also enhance the diamond’s uniqueness and beauty, adding an intriguing internal texture that differentiates it from other clear Herkimer diamonds.
The presence of carbon often marks a highly valued specimen because these types of inclusions are rare. The uniqueness of the inclusion makes the crystal visually distinct, and for collectors and gem enthusiasts, such an inclusion can increase both aesthetic appeal and market value.
